The Arts in our part of Las Vegas

New venues are getting the attention they deserve

The Las Vegas Arts District, fired up by the success of its First Friday celebrations, is getting national attention. A recent Sunset Magazine spotlighted our growing arts community’s monthly street celebration and the travel guidebook publisher Frommers carried a long article in its on-line publication www.frommers.com.

The Frommers article was frank: “The art varies from downright awful to pretty good . . .” Yet it did a good job of listing a number of locations and websites and praise as well. The Sunset article was a little more general but certainly painted an attractive picture of the attractions. Both articles are proof that those who have worked so hard to nurture art in Las Vegas are finding success.

Here are some of the locations mentioned in one or both of the articles. Take some time and check out the Las Vegas arts scene if you haven’t done so already. Heck, even if you have, they deserve another look . . .

  • Arts Factory; 101-109 E. Charleston Blvd.; 702/676-1111; www.theartsfactory.com
  • Holsum Bread Factory, four blocks west on Charleston towards I-15
  • Commerce Street Studios at the corner of Utah and Commerce five blocks south
  • Contemporary Arts Collective; 702/382-3886; www.cac-lasvegas.org; a nonprofit collective and located in the Arts Factory
  • Godt-Cleary Projects; 1217 S. Main Street; 702/452-2200; www.godtcleary.com
  • Dust Gallery; 1221 S. Main Street; 702/880-3878; www.dustgallery.com

While they aren’t actually art studios, there are interesting shops in the area along Colorado, Main and 4th Streets. And, of course, Cindy Funkhouser of the Funk House (1228 S. Casino Center Blvd.; tel. 702/678-6278; www.thefunkhouselasvegas.com), deserves much credit for the development of the entire area.

While certainly not an art studio, the always interesting Art Bar at 1511 South Main; 702/437-2787 displays work from various local artists on the walls. We shouldn’t overlook several public facilities either.

Near the Arts Factory is the Clark County Government Center at 500 South Grand Central Parkway has revolving exhibits of art in the main floor rotunda. Check www.co.clark.nv.us/Parks/Art_at_the_Government_Center.htm for current information.

Further south at the UNLV campus, the Donna Beam Fine Arts Gallery hosts exhibitions of nationally recognized artists as well as the work of faculty and students. The exhibit schedule is listed at http://finearts.unlv.edu/Facilities/Donna_Beam_Gallery/exhibition.html

The Las Vegas / Clark County Library District devotes time and space to art exhibits covering a wide range of mediums and topics. You can use their website search at http://www.lvccld.org/events/ to find out what’s on near you. In our part of the Las Vegas Valley, the libraries nearest most of us are

  • Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89119
  • Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89110
  • Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89122

Go for a look, enjoy, and support the arts.
